Rights and credits

We make a real effort to respect copyright. For each game below, we say who made it, what we use and under what terms, and we give its credit lines word for word.

DOSHD is a fan project made by Aviv Orly with Claude AI agents. It isn't affiliated with, or endorsed by, the makers, publishers or rights holders of the games here. Game names, characters, art, music and code belong to their owners.

Dangerous Dave (1990)

Play it: Dangerous Dave.

Dangerous Dave is by John Romero and was published by Softdisk; the game's notice reads "(C) 1990 SOFTDISK, INC." It came out on Softdisk's Gamer's Edge Sampler disk, whose notice let people copy the entire disk and give it away, but not copy individual programs or sell it. John Romero has since said: "The 1990 Dangerous Dave was made for free distribution- it was freeware. Never sold." (on X, 3 December 2021) Rolling Stone reported in 2016 that John Romero "bought the rights back to the game", and the boxed Dangerous Dave collection sold at romero.com includes the 1990 game.

We own no rights in Dangerous Dave. We have no written licence from John Romero or anyone else; we rely on John Romero's public statement. Our Dangerous Dave page carries the original 1990 DAVE.EXE and runs it in your browser, free to play. The site carries advertising. The HD and Super HD art is our own redrawing. Thanks to the modding community at shikadi.net for its public notes on the game's file formats.

Electro Man (1992-94)

Play it: Electro Man.

The game's data and art come from its 2006 release, which is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5. That licence lets anyone "copy, distribute, display, and perform the work", "make derivative works" and "make commercial use of the work", with credit and under the same licence. Our HD art derived from the game's art is shared under that licence too. Our code is a JavaScript translation of two MIT-licensed ports, and stays under the MIT licence.

The credit lines, word for word as written for its page:

Electro Body: xLand, Poland, 1992. Electro Man: the English edition, published by Epic MegaGames in 1993-94. Designed, programmed and drawn by Janusz Pelc and Maciej Miasik. Music by Daniel Kleczynski. Produced by Marek Kubowicz.

In 2006 Maciej Miasik released the game, with the permission of its copyright holders, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 licence: creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/. The game's data and art are under that licence, and this page's art derived from the game is shared under the same licence. Epic MegaGames played no role in the 2006 release and does not endorse this page; nor do the game's makers.

The code is a JavaScript translation of Maciej Miasik's MIT-licensed ports pyelectroman (github.com/tosiabunio/pyelectroman) and electroman-playdate (github.com/tosiabunio/electroman-playdate), and stays under the MIT licence. Their MIT notices are kept in this page's source and below.

When the game ends, its DOS text is drawn in u_vga16, Dmitry Bolkhovityanov's 8 by 16 VGA-style font, whose MIT/X11-style notice is also below.

The original 2006 release is a free download from Classic DOS Games, where Maciej Miasik placed it: classicdosgames.com/game/Electro_Man.html (the file em.zip).

SkyRoads (1993)

Play it: SkyRoads.

SkyRoads is by Bluemoon: the game names BlueMoon Software, and its readme Bluemoon Interactive. The game's intro credits, word for word:

Copyright ©1993 BlueMoon Software
Code: Jaan Tallinn, Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu
Graphics: Kaspar P. Loit
Music: Ott Aaloe, Hasso Brück
Thanks 2: Paul Ney, Priit Kull

What we use: our SkyRoads page is a translation of the SKYROADS.EXE machine code to JavaScript, with HD versions of the game's pictures. Its 8 by 8 font and VGA palette come from SeaVGABIOS. We hold no rights in SkyRoads, and we have no licence or permission for this translation. The SkyRoads page carries no ads. Thanks to the public skyroads-port project: its notes and routine names were our leads, and none of its code is used.
